Mechanical Behavior Performance of Gaskets

In the previous issue, we shared with you the main properties of gaskets (mechanical behavior performance, sealing behavior performance, and gasket stress). Today, we will introduce the mechanical behavior performance of gaskets — load-deformation behavior.

 

Load-Deformation Behavior


In the sealing field, the mechanical properties of gaskets directly affect the sealing performance of flange joint connections, and load-deformation behavior is one of the core indicators.

 

Simply put, the load-deformation relationship of a gasket is usually expressed by the gasket stress σg acting on the gasket and the gasket deformation δg under that stress, and sometimes directly by the acting force.

As shown in the above image, the symbol σgi represents the initial installation gasket stress, and this initial installation gasket stress has a corresponding gasket compression amount, which is denoted by δo. The symbol σgo represents the working gasket stress, where δR has a special meaning: it is the gasket rebound amount generated after the gasket stress decreases due to the action of medium thrust.

 

Precisely because of the existence of this physical process, when we focus on the gaskets used in FLT joints, we find that the rebound amount of the gasket is an important performance indicator, which plays a significant role in evaluating gasket performance and ensuring the stable operation of related equipment.
