Important Properties of Gaskets


In our previous issue, we discussed one of the main performances of gaskets, i.e., mechanical behavior performance. In this issue, we will focus on sealing behavior performance.

 

Sealing Behavior Performance ?


It is difficult to truly reflect the complex leakage phenomenon of the medium through the gasket by relying solely on theoretical predictions for the sealing behavior of gaskets. Therefore, it is mainly determined through experiments.

 

The sealing behavior performance mainly includes three indicators: leakage rate L, tightness T, and tightness parameter Tp.

Leakage Rate L

It refers to the mass or volume of the medium leaking through the gaps of the sealing surface and the gasket body per unit time. This parameter intuitively reflects the anti-leakage ability of the gasket.


Tightness T

It is obtained by conducting room - temperature or high - temperature sealing tests on gasket samples under standard test conditions. It represents the leakage rate of the gasket under a certain gasket stress and test medium pressure. The degree of tightness characterizes the sealing performance of the medium through the gasket itself and between the gasket and the sealing surface.

Tightness Parameter Tp

The tightness parameter Tp is a dimensionless characterization parameter that connects the sealing stress and the leakage rate. It builds a quantitative bridge between the sealing stress and the leakage rate, facilitating engineers to quickly evaluate the sealing performance of gaskets under different working conditions and providing a scientific basis for gasket selection and sealing structure design.
